DATED 3-28-44
Dearest mom,
I’m still in N.Y. and have been having a really swell time looking over the town and all the swell things they have here to see, but we’ve been put on the alert for shipment soon so I guess I won’t have a chance to go in any more.
I’ve seen a lot of actors and actresses here and radio city, Times square and all the places you hear so much about but I don’t care much about N.Y. All the people here are either Jews or Italians and everything is really expensive. There is a cover charge on almost everyplace you go in.
My idea on the — that we had figured out may not work so here is another way I have figured out. I’ll spell the name of the name of the place I go by changing my middle initial every time I write till I’ve finished a word. Like if its Italy I’ll write Earl I – Earl T, Earl A etc… until I’ve completed the word and when you receive all the word or name change your initial to let me know you’ve caught on. Don’t say anything about this when you answer this letter.
Has sis received the gum yet? I bet she is chewing heavy now isn’t she?
If you haven’t sent the watch yet you can have it and wear it till I come home again.
Oh yes – Be sure and send Lee a nice Easter card and a nice birthday present out of the next allotment check and pay Aunt what you have left. I wish you would send her a box of candy or something for Easter if you can. Will you? Gee thanks – you’re swell mom. I sent her a nice box of candy today for Easter. I thought I’d better before I leave the states or It would get there to late for Easter.
Well I’m out of news so will close & mail this in town. Tell Sis & Pop hello! for me.
Your loving Son,
Earl D.
P.S. This so & so pen is awful.
