DATED 3-14-44
Dearest mom,
It’s another beautiful day in GA and here I sit & still nothing to do but eat, sleep and write letters. Golly – what a life I picked when I signed up for a [sic] engineer job. It really grows boring at time. I haven’t done any work, exercises, guard or K.P. or any of the things a real soldier does since I became an engineer-gunner. Maybe they’re just resting me for the work I’m to do overseas. Last night Bob Hope really gave us a build up over the radio. He told the rest of the army what a gunner really goes through and it made us all real proud. He said we had more nerve than anyone in the army and a lot of gab like that. (If he only knew. Ha! Ha!)
I’m hoping I’ll get another furlough but it’s really not the way the army does unless it’s just a miracle or something happens. They still don’t know when we will leave here or where we will go. I hope it’s to — if any place. Remember what — means Ha! (That’s our secret.)
They put out an order saying that we can start wearing our sun tan outfits tomorrow. Will you get me a nice shirt with stripes and all and send the sun tan pants I have at home for me to wear please. You can get it Sat. and send it. No that may be to late. Order a 15½-33 shirt and tell Levy Bros. to send it and you can mail my pants from home.
It’s almost mail call time so I’m going over and see if I have any letters. I hope I get some mail today.
Tell Sis and dad to write me some time real soon and lots of good luck to you all.
Your loving son,
Earl
P.S. – Hurry the pants to me before they decide to move me and don’t insure them because it takes to long.
