FLORENCE ARMY AIR FIELD – FLORENCE, SC POSTMARKED: 2-2-44
Dearest mom,
I’ve been trying to get in my usual four hrs. flying time today but it was to foggy up in the blue today & the ceiling was low so I didn’t have to fly this afternoon so I’m going to write every one I know a letter & you’re first so here goes.
I have been having a lot of swell times here with my new girl friends and I go bowling, dancing or something when I’m not flying but I’m really getting home sick for KY & I also would like to visit Nebraska but for the life of me I can’t figure how I’m going there on a 3 day pass. I may be able to get home on a pass if I can catch a plane ride. I want you to find out how far it is and how long it takes by train from home to Florence. I have forgotten how long it took me on the way down here. It seems like a long time since I’ve been there but it hasn’t been to long.
How is my brother & sister getting along with their troubles by now? I sure hope they are both allright. How is Aunt doing? I haven’t heard from her for quite some time. I guess she isn’t able to write. Tell C.K., dad & Sis to write me some once and a while. I love to hear from them all.
I’m going to visit Columbia, S.C. this week end if I can rake up enough dough. I didn’t get my flying pay yet so I’m just about broke. How about sending me a few bucks till the end of the month? I made out an allotment starting this month for $50 so you should be getting it about the last of the month. This is also the month you got a bond isn’t it or was it January.
I’m glad to hear that Arch got back to the States allright. Do you ever hear any about the other guys at home I used to know. What about Johnny Wheeler & Joe Black and the guys I graduated with.
Well I have run out of gab again so will close hoping to hear from you real soon.
Your loving son,
Earl D.
