ARMY AIR FIELD – FLORENCE, S.C. DATED 12-16-43
Dear Folks,
I just arrived & signed in with my commanding officer and drew my bed out of the supplies room & they told me to take the rest of the day off so here I am writing to you.
I’m not so sure but I don’t think I’ll like it here much but I don’t expect to be here much anyway so I don’t care. I can get along allmost anywhere.
I stayed put in Atlanta, Georgia yesterday & went out to see my girl & we had a swell chicken dinner. I caught the nine o’clock train out of Georgia and got here about 8:30 this morning. I could have stayed at home another night had I known it but I wasn’t sure. (So here I am.) I came by the way of Nashville to Atlanta & then from Atlanta to Augusta & then here. I was black with coal dust when I got here. Ha! Ha! I had to stay in the shower about 15 minutes before I got rid of it. Excuse me I’ll be right back
I just reported down to the orderly room & ask them what a gunner did here and they seemed surprised that I was wanting something to do. I think that I finally got a soft job in this darn army. I am supposed to fly a few hrs. a month & maybe go to school & the rest of the time I can sleep or anything I’d care to do. I think I’ll just sit around and grow old. Ha! Ha! I will go to school 8 hours a day & then when I’m assigned to a pilot I may get another furlough if he gets one because if he gets a delay enroute I will also get one. (Golly – it’s almost to good to be true but anything can happen to me.
Well I guess I better close for now & mail this so you will get it soon. Be good & write real often.
Love
Earl D.
P.S. Excuse the scribbling
