ARMY AIR FORCES GUNNERY SCHOOL – TYNDALL FIELD, FLORIDA
DATED 10-17(?)-43 POSTMARKED OCT. 18 1943
Dear mom,
I have today off so think I’ll try and catch up on my correspondence. I slept till about ten o’clock this morning and got up & went to 10:30 church call & just now got back.
We have to dress up today & have our class pictures taken for our class book when we graduate. I imagine they will only take a group picture so it shouldn’t take very long.
Boy it really has been chilly here for the last four days. It’s not very cold but the breeze coming off the gulf is just enough to make it chilly around here. I guess I’ll freeze when I leave Florida after I graduate.
Oh yes – Those two pair of shorts you sent me were to big & being so I don’t have a chance to go to the post office around here I sold them to a big fat guy so how about getting me two pair about size 30 and don’t get the ones with legs on them get some like my swimming trunks are & if you can’t find any short pants like I ask for my swim trunks will do.
I have recd. several letters from Lee but I think I’ll not write her for awhile. I’ll tell you why next time I come home. She just can’t seem to see things the way I do so I think I’ll get me a girl who does.
I guess little Judy has gone home by now hasn’t she. It seems as if you keep her more than her mother does lately. Ha!
I guess I’m saving money while I’m here any way because I haven’t been paid since the last of August. I should have enough to have a good time if I get a furlough when I leave here. I’m glad it turned out that way because now I won’t have to worry about my finances. I don’t think I’ll get paid a thing while I’m here. I might get a partial payment of $16.
I think I will have to march the guys over to chow at noon so I guess I’d better close & mail this before chow time. I also have to write a couple more letters so take care of yourself & write soon.
Love
Your Son
Earl D.
P.S. Ask Isabelle how that picture she took of me turned out
