ARMY AIR FORCES GUNNERY SCHOOL – TYNDALL FIELD, FLORIDA
DATED 8:30 P.M. 10-12-43
Dear mom,
I just got in from my daily exercises and thought I’d drop you a line before I turn in for the night.
I am doing fine & I like school allright but it is really hard. We only go to school 8 hrs. but the day is actually from 4:30 till 6 at night & then by the time we eat supper it is bed time again.
I don’t think there is a thing wrong with my teeth but I was told to report to the dentist for another survey in the morning so guess if there is anything wrong he will fix it up allright. Boy I hate those guys called dentist.
It seems as if everything here in Florida is sky high. This box of stationary cost me $1.50 & it is the cheapest they had & almost all the stuff in the Post Exchange is about the same.
Say – Tell sis to drop by Gibsons & see if they have a map of the U.S. or Florida either one. I’ve been looking all over for one & I can’t find a thing. If they do wrap it up in the Oldham Era & send it to me.
I heard from Lee today (6 letters) and they were all transferred from Tennesse [sic]. She is still taking nursing. Oh yes. Don’t write her anymore till I tell you to. I am sorta peeved at her. I may even get me a new girl. Or go back to my old one (Brownie).
I am the darn Flight Chief again & when the C.O. gets me up in the morning I have to go around & roust all these lugs up and get them going. Some of them have to be looked after like baby’s [sic]. It’s Cpl. this & Cpl. that till I almost blow my top at times. I guess that’s why I get $66 a month & they only get $50 though. Oh well as I said before I can’t gripe because I asked for this.
I am waiting till I get your next letter before I write Steve to see if he’s sent my clothes as yet. I’m not sure but I think he went on furlough the day after I left so that would make them have to wait till he gets back.
Well I guess I better close for now & get in some sack time as we call it so I can get the guys up in the morning. Tell Sis & Pop to write me sometime.
Love your Son
