DATED 10-10-43
Dearest Folks,
Today I moved to the school sqd. & I am now living in a nice Bks. again. The barracks here are really swell. We have been living in tents up until now.
I recd. your letters & thanks a million for the dough. It sure did come in handy. I still can’t figure out why aunt got a bond from me. I had them made out to you I thought. I might have had my mind on something else that day but I can’t remember the day at all. I sent you the slip & it had your name on it didn’t it. Oh well – it’s all in the family.
Say – you know I haven’t heard from Lee in a whole darn week. I’m afraid she did the inevitable & joined something or else got in an accident of some kind.
It is still nice & warm here but the flies & mosquitoes are really rough & rugged. This is the only place in the world where flies bite like mosquitoes & boy are they ever thick.
I don’t think I’ll wash out but I won’t get a Sgt. Rating when I graduate. They only give Cpl. Ratings now. I don’t want to wash out because if I ever get a furlough I’m going to brush up on my mathematics and go out for Cadet. I’m tired of being pushed around in this darn army!
This 6 weeks is going to be the toughest 6 weeks I ever spent in the army. We have to get up at 4:30 in the morning and we work or study till 6 P.M. at night. I told one of the guys today who was thinking about washing out voluntarily that we could take anything they could give us for six weeks & I honestly think we can.
Well I better close. I am going to drop Steve a line & tell him to get on the beam & send my clothes.
Love
Earl D.
