Press Release (May 19, 2021)
Morris Mount Roberts Archaeology Field School
Field School Dates: June 21-24, 2021; Ages 13 through Adult
Since 2007 the Oldham County History Center has offered an archaeology field school each summer for high school students. This year, with the support from the Morris Mount Roberts Fellowship, the field school will allow those 13 and older to participate in the Field School. The Field School is conducted under the direction of licensed archaeologists Jeannine Kreinbrink and Doug Von Stroh. Kreinbrink is an expert on Antebellum archaeology sites in Kentucky. The study is conducted the Bibb Escapes/Gatewood Plantation site outside of Bedford in Trimble County.
In 2016 the National Park Service National designated the Bibb Escapes/Gatewood Plantation on the National Underground Railroad Network. Enslaved by William Gatewood, Henry Bibb and his wife and daughter lived on the property before their escape and separation. Bibb became a national spokesperson for the abolition of slavery and established a refugee colony in Canada.
Participants have the option to choose how many days they would like to participate and provide their own transportation to the site. Students ages 13 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult, 18 years or older. According to history center director, Nancy Theiss, “We have many adults who have expressed an interest to participate in this program which in the past was limited to high school students. College students can also use this opportunity for field experience in archaeology and cultural anthropology.”
The Morris Mount Roberts Fellowship supports opportunities for research in African American studies. Ruth Roberts, who established the Fellowship and is a native of Oldham County stated the Fellowship, “provides special opportunities to highlight African Americans in the local community and their historical contributions. The history of African Americans in LaGrange is part of the history of our town and my family.”
There is no charge to participate in the Morris Mount Roberts Field School but registration is required and must be made in advance. Those interested can register by calling the Oldham County History Center at 502.222.0826 or email: info@oldhamkyhistory.com
